what is the idea that urban legends are important and reveal significant things about our culture? how did you see the recent urban legend of September 11th incident, the war in Iraq or a more recent event in the news? anything related specifically to online or computer-related education? any legends on the Web sites you looked at that you didn't realize were legends? If so, are you humble enough to admit it? any urban legends on the Internet that you just can believe anyone would have thought were true? please list the website if you have it. thanks.

  1. urban legends are like fairy tales (not the disney crap but real Grimm's fairy tales) because they warn us about danger (real or percieved) and keep the masses from doing stupid/dangerous things - - there are no witches in the forest, but the forest is very dangerous because you can get lost, become injured, be attacked by wild animals, etc - it is way easier to make people, children especially, afraid of witches and therefore keep them out of the forest. - - there is a great urban legend about a group of college boys that planned the perfect bungee jump off of an apartment building. They checked the stretch of the bungee against the height of the jumper and calculated the perfect length of cord so that the jumper would just brush the ground with his finger tips. They failed to calculate in the fact that the building numbered the floors skipping number 13. The jumper piled into the ground and was killed instantly. What does this teach us?? Don't jump off of buildings and don't trust anybody to number floors accurately.
